Quick answer: why do soy candles go wrong?

Soy candle problems often involve the grade and quality of the wax, cooling conditions, wick size, fragrance amount or curing time. Start with your wax supplier's guidance, change one thing at a time and test each new jar, wick and fragrance combination.

Key facts about soy candle problems

  • Most soy candle problems come from temperature, wick size, fragrance amount and curing time, not only the wax quality.
  • Wrinkly tops, cracks and wet spots are mostly cooling problems.
  • White frosting is natural in soy wax. It is cosmetic and does not change how the candle burns.
  • Weak scent can come from a short cure, the wrong wick or poorly mixed fragrance. Follow your wax supplier's curing guidance and compare results over time.
  • Tunnelling can indicate a wick that is too small. Mushrooming and soot can indicate an oversized or untrimmed wick. Trim to about 5 to 6mm, or follow your wick supplier's guidance.
  • Always test burn a sample before you sell any candle.

8 common soy candle problems and how to fix them

PROBLEM 1

Wrinkly or bumpy tops on soy candles

Soy wax candle in a ceramic container with wrinkles and an uneven top around the wick
You see

Ripples, craters or a rough top after the wax sets.

Why

The wax cooled too fast or unevenly. Soy tends to do this, especially when poured hot into cold jars or set near aircon and fans.

Fix

Pour into room-temperature jars away from drafts. Let the candle set undisturbed. Smooth the top with a light second pour or a heat gun.

Maker tip: With a heat gun, keep it moving and stop as soon as the top turns shiny. Too much heat can pull the wax away from the glass and give you wet spots.

PROBLEM 2

Cracks in soy candles

Cracked top on a soy wax candle, top view
You see

Cracks on the candle surface.

Why

Soy wax can crack when it cools too quickly or when the temperature swings. Also happens with poor or expired wax.

Fix

Cool slowly at a steady room temperature. Do not move the candle while it sets.

Maker tip: If a candle cracks after it has set, a light pass with a heat gun can close the surface. Always do a test burn on a sample before you sell the batch.

PROBLEM 3

Wet spots in soy candles

Soy candle in a glass jar with wet spots where the wax has pulled away from the glass
You see

Patches where the wax pulls away from the glass and shows gaps.

Why

The wax shrinks away from a cold, damp or dirty jar.

Fix

Clean and dry the jars. Warm them slightly. Follow the pour temperature and cool slowly.

Maker tip: Opaque containers such as tins and ceramic jars hide wet spots. They are handy while you tune your recipe. Wet spots are usually cosmetic. See our candle jars.

PROBLEM 4

Sinkholes in soy candles

Soy wax jar candle with a sinkhole dip beside the wick
You see

A dip or hole around the wick as the candle cools.

Why

The wax shrinks as it sets, and the middle sets last. Happens with blended wax or wax quality.

Fix

Pour in two stages. Fill most of the jar, let it set a little, then top up with a small amount of slightly warmer wax before it is fully cool.

Maker tip: If a hole has already formed, poke a few small holes around the wick, top up with warm wax and let it set again.

PROBLEM 5

Weak scent throw in soy candles

Two burning soy wax jar candles side by side to compare scent throw
Weak scentStrong scent
You see

Little smell from the unlit candle (cold throw) or from the lit candle (hot throw).

Why

Too short a cure, a wick too small to melt a full pool, fragrance not mixed well, or a fragrance oil not made for candles.

Fix

Weigh the fragrance, stir well and follow your wax supplier's curing guidance. Compare scent after curing and again after a week. If needed, test one wick size up. Stay within both the wax and fragrance suppliers' candle limits.

Maker tip: Cold throw is the smell of the unlit candle. Hot throw is the smell while it burns. Judge both, and write both down in your notes. Choose fragrance oils made for candles.

PROBLEM 6

Tunnelling and mushrooming wicks in soy candles

Soy wax jar candle tunnelling down the middle with unmelted wax on the sides
You see

The flame digs a tunnel down the middle, or a black blob grows on the wick.

Why

The wick may not suit the jar. An undersized wick can cause tunnelling; an oversized wick can mushroom and smoke.

Fix

Match the wick to the jar width. ECO and HTP are ranges to consider for testing. Trim the wick to about 5 to 6mm and follow supplier guidance on burn duration. Do not extend a burn beyond safe limits just to reach the jar edge.

Maker tip: Compare melt pools during supervised test burns. Browse candle wicks in one size up and one size down to test.

PROBLEM 7

Soot and smoke from soy candles

Soy candle jar with black soot on the rim and glass
You see

Black marks on the glass, or a flickering, smoky flame.

Why

A wick that is too big, an untrimmed wick, drafts, or too much fragrance. Also happened when using lower grade wax.

Fix

Try a smaller wick, trim before every burn, burn away from fans, and keep fragrance within the supplier's limit.

Maker tip: Test burn in a room with no fan running. A draft alone can make a good candle smoke.

PROBLEM 8

Oil spots and soft soy wax

Soy wax candle in a jar with oil spots on the surface
You see

Oily droplets or beads on the top or sides. Soft wax, or tops that melt in a hot car or during delivery.

Why

Too much fragrance oil for the wax to hold, or heat softening the wax. Soy waxes soften at lower temperatures than many other waxes, and Malaysian heat is strong.

Fix

Weigh your fragrance and stay within the supplier's candle limit. Store and ship candles cool and out of the sun. Pack them snugly.

Maker tip: Check an unlit sample in representative delivery conditions before selling. Keep it in a suitable tray and do not leave candles in parked cars.

Good to know: white frosting is natural. Soy wax crystallises as it cools, so almost every soy candle frosts a little, and dark colours show it most. It does not change how the candle burns. If it bothers you, cool the candle slowly at a steady room temperature, or use a lighter colour.

Also check: overheating the wax can turn it yellow. Stay below the temperature in your wax supplier's instructions.

The root of most problems

3 habits that prevent most soy candle problems

HABIT 1

Control the temperature

Use a thermometer, not guesswork. Follow your wax and fragrance supplier's temperatures for melting, adding fragrance and pouring. Warm the jars slightly and cool the candles slowly away from drafts.

HABIT 2

Match the wick to the jar

Start from the wick range for your jar width, then test one size up and one size down. Trim to about 5 to 6mm before every burn, or follow your wick supplier's guidance.

HABIT 3

Weigh, cure and test

Weigh the wax and fragrance every time. Follow your wax supplier's curing guidance and record every batch so you can repeat what works.

Before you pour and before you sell

Soy candle making checklists

Before every pour

  • Jars clean, dry and at room temperature, or slightly warm.
  • Wax and fragrance weighed, not guessed.
  • Wick centred and held straight with a wick holder.
  • Fans and aircon off, or pointed away from the candles.
  • Thermometer ready. Temperatures noted.
  • A steady surface where the candles can set without being moved.

Before you sell

  • Follow the wax supplier's curing guidance and compare scent over time.
  • Conduct supervised test burns within supplier-recommended burn durations.
  • Check cold scent, hot scent, soot, melt pool and tunnelling.
  • Check an unlit sample for softness in representative storage conditions.
  • Pack snugly and test your delivery method.
  • Add burn safety warnings to your labels and never leave a burning candle unattended.

Malaysia tips

Making soy candles in Malaysia: heat, humidity and aircon tips

Aircon and fans

A cold draught across a fresh pour is a common cause of wrinkly tops and cracks. Let candles set in a still room at a steady temperature.

Humidity

Dry jars well, store supplies in a dry place and keep wax bags sealed.

Heat in storage and delivery

Soy wax is soft. Keep stock out of the sun, never leave candles in a parked car, and test your packing and courier method before you sell.

Find the cause

The 3-candle test: change one thing at a time

Pour your test batch first, then allow time for curing and supervised burn tests. This is not a same-day result.

1. Fix the basics

Use one jar type and one wax. Weigh the wax and fragrance. Write down the temperatures, wick and date.

2. Change one thing

Pour three candles. Change only one thing across them, such as fragrance amount, pour temperature or wick size. Keep everything else the same.

3. Cure and photograph

Follow your wax supplier's curing guidance. Take photos of the tops and sides, note cold scent and record the cure time for each test.

4. Burn and compare

Run supervised burns within supplier-recommended burn durations. Note hot scent, soot, melt pool and tunnelling. Keep the best-performing combination and test the next change.

Our testing

Smoother tops

In our own tests, Perfect Pour gave smoother tops. Customers say the same, and you can read their words in the reviews below.

Our testing

Fewer sinkholes

In our own tests, we saw fewer sinkholes with Perfect Pour. Pair it with a two-stage pour for the best chance of a flat top.

Our testing

Better scent throw

In our own tests, Perfect Pour gave a better scent throw. Scent also depends on your fragrance, wick and cure, so always test your own recipe.

Our testing

Easier and faster to work with

We have done many tests and find Perfect Pour easier and faster to work with. Pellets pour straight from the bag, so there is no chopping or scooping.

Pellets vs flakes

Pellets weigh the same way every time

Most soy waxes are sold as flakes. Flakes come in irregular sizes and shapes, so they pack differently each time and the same scoop or cup can hold a different weight. Pellets are uniform, so they pour and measure consistently. Weigh them on a scale and you can repeat your recipe exactly.

Pellets vs flakes

Pellets hold less moisture than flakes

Flakes have more surface area, so they tend to pick up and hold more moisture than dense pellets. Moisture is something you want to keep out of hot wax. Keep any wax sealed and stored cool and dry, and pellets give you a head start.

Test notes come from the Craftiviti team. Individual results vary with your jar, wick, fragrance and method, so test every new recipe.

FAQ

Soy candle problems FAQ: your questions answered

Why does my soy candle have a wrinkly top?

Soy wax can cool unevenly when poured too hot, poured into cold jars or set near fans or aircon. Pour into room-temperature jars, let it set undisturbed and smooth the top with a light second pour or a heat gun.

What is frosting on a soy candle, and is it harmful?

Frosting is a white, crystal-like layer that forms as soy wax cools. It is natural, and almost every soy candle frosts a little. It does not change how the candle burns. Cooling slowly at a steady room temperature reduces it, and dark colours show it more.

Why is my soy candle not scenting the room?

Common causes include too short a cure, an unsuitable wick, poorly mixed fragrance or a fragrance oil not made for candles. Follow your wax supplier's curing guidance, compare scent over time and test wick changes one at a time.

How long should soy candles cure?

Follow the guidance for your specific wax. Scent can develop over several days, so record cure times and compare results rather than treating one curing period as right for every soy wax.

How do I stop wet spots in soy candles?

Clean and dry the jars, warm them slightly, follow the pour temperature and cool the candles slowly. Wet spots are usually cosmetic.

Why do my soy candles crack?

Soy wax can crack when it cools too fast or the room temperature swings. Let candles set at a steady room temperature and do not move them while they set.

Why does my soy candle have oil on top?

Oily droplets can indicate more fragrance oil than the wax can hold. Weigh your fragrance and stay within both the wax and fragrance suppliers' candle limits. Heat can also make soft soy wax sweat.

Which wick should I use for soy wax?

It depends on your jar width, wax, fragrance and colour. ECO and HTP are wick ranges to consider for testing. Test one size up and one size down, and always test burn before you sell.

Can I remelt a soy candle that went wrong?

Many makers remelt failed candles and pour again, following their wax and container suppliers' handling guidance. Re-test the burn, because the wick and fragrance may need adjusting.

Do soy candles need special care in Malaysia?

Heat and humidity make cooling, storage and delivery harder. Cool candles away from fans and aircon, keep jars dry, store candles out of the sun and test an unlit sample in representative delivery conditions.

How do I fix sinkholes in soy candles?

Pour in two stages. Fill most of the jar, let it set a little, then top up with a small amount of slightly warmer wax. If a hole has already formed, poke a few small holes around the wick, top up with warm wax and let it set again.

Why does my soy candle tunnel?

Tunnelling can mean the wick is too small for the jar. Test one wick size up and compare melt pools during supervised burns. Follow recommended burn durations rather than burning indefinitely to reach the edge.

Why does my soy candle smoke or leave soot?

Soot and smoke can come from a wick that is too big or untrimmed, drafts or too much fragrance. Trim before every burn, test a smaller wick and keep fragrance within supplier limits.

What is the difference between cold throw and hot throw?

Cold throw is the smell of the unlit candle. Hot throw is the smell while the candle burns. Judge both when you test, and write both down in your notes.

What temperature should I pour soy wax?

Follow your specific wax and fragrance suppliers' instructions. Melting temperature is not the same as pouring temperature. Check the current guidance for each stage and record the temperatures you test.

Where can I buy soy wax in Malaysia?

Craftiviti sells Perfect Pour USA soy wax pellets online at craftiviti.com and at Level 2, Centrepoint Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya. Check the product page for current availability.

Will Perfect Pour soy wax fix these problems?

No wax fixes every problem on its own. Perfect Pour is a soy wax in pellets that is easy to weigh, which helps you repeat a recipe and test one change at a time. Start with a small pack.

Is Perfect Pour soy wax easy to use?

Perfect Pour is sold as pellets, so it is easy to weigh and melt. It can be used for beginner container-candle projects. Use a scale, a thermometer, a tested recipe and a small batch, then adjust one thing at a time.

Does Perfect Pour reduce wastage?

No wax removes wastage by itself. Weighing pellets, starting with a small test pack and changing one thing at a time help you waste less wax, fewer jars and less time on failed batches.

How much Perfect Pour should I buy first?

Start with a small pack to test your jar recipe. Check the product page for current pack sizes, then buy more once your fragrance and wick tests work.

Is Perfect Pour pure soy wax?

The supplier's safety data sheet lists one ingredient: 100% hydrogenated soybean oil. No other ingredients are listed. You can download the sheet on the Perfect Pour product page.

Does Perfect Pour have additives?

The supplier's safety data sheet lists only hydrogenated soybean oil and no other ingredients. If you need a written statement for a customer or a certification, ask us on WhatsApp and we will check with the supplier.

Is Perfect Pour better than other soy waxes?

Customers describe it as easy to use, with a smooth surface and a clean burn. In our own tests we saw smoother tops, fewer sinkholes and a better scent throw. Results vary with your jar, wick, fragrance and method, so run a side-by-side test with your current wax.

Why are pellets better than flakes for candle making?

Most soy waxes are sold as flakes. Flakes are irregular in size and shape, so the same scoop or cup can hold a different weight each time. Pellets are uniform, so they pour and measure consistently, and you can repeat your recipe exactly when you weigh them.

Do flakes hold more moisture than pellets?

Flakes have more surface area, so they tend to pick up and hold more moisture than dense pellets. Keep any wax sealed and stored cool and dry, and keep moisture out of hot wax.

Does Perfect Pour give smoother tops and fewer sinkholes?

In our own tests, Perfect Pour gave smoother tops and fewer sinkholes, and customers describe a smooth surface. Cooling conditions, jar, wick and pour method still matter, so use a two-stage pour and test your own recipe.

Does Perfect Pour give a better scent throw?

In our own tests, Perfect Pour gave a better scent throw. Scent also depends on your fragrance oil, wick and cure, so weigh your fragrance, follow the supplier's limits and compare cold and hot scent.
